"Thank you for a very enjoyable game." HAL speaks this to Frank after putting him in check-mate, a bit of very subtle foreshadowing for what's to come.
Stanley Kubrick was a major fan of playing chess. He successfully hustled chess in Washington Square park in his early days in order to make money to help pay for his films. He was very good at it. (How else do you secure one of the biggest budgets in Hollywood at the age of 37?)
Chess Forum is located in the heart of Greenwich Village, very near where Stanley played in his early days. We'll be hanging there in the evening, learning new opening maneuvers, and trying to think and play the way Kubrick would've.
